Forward Deployed Engineer Skills: 6 Areas Indian Employers Want

Key takeaways
  • Indian FDE listings in October 2026 keep returning to six skill areas: production coding, APIs and integrations, cloud and observability, data and SQL, applied AI (LLMs, RAG, evals) and customer-facing scoping.
  • Experience asks in listings range from 1–3 years at small startups to 3–6 years at Bengaluru AI startups and 5–10 years for client-delivery roles, so most hires are lateral moves.
  • Pay evidence is wide: employer-provided bands run from ₹7–10 LPA to ₹70–90 LPA, and third-party guides disagree on entry-level pay.
  • The fastest way to build these skills is one deployed project that touches a messy API, real data, a cloud deployment, an LLM workflow and a written client-style brief.

The skills Indian employers list for forward deployed engineers (FDEs) fall into six areas: production coding, API integration, cloud and observability, data and SQL, applied AI, and customer-facing scoping. You don’t need to be an expert in all six. Most live listings expect a solid base in the first three, working knowledge of the next two, and a track record in the sixth.

This guide maps each skill to what actual listings in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Gurugram and Chennai ask for. It then gives you a practical way to build each one. For the role itself, start with What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)? Role, Skills & Pay in India.

Forward deployed engineer skills at a glance

# Skill area What Indian listings ask for Evidence
1 Production software engineering Python or TypeScript, shipped systems Razorpay (Bengaluru) wants 3+ years shipping production software, strong in Python or TypeScript.
2 APIs, integrations, auth REST, webhooks, SDKs, SSO Razorpay lists APIs, webhooks, auth, data pipelines and production debugging.
3 Cloud, deployment, observability AWS/GCP, Kubernetes, Datadog/Prometheus A Bengaluru listing on Indeed India asks for cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Kubernetes) and observability tools.
4 Data and SQL SQL, PostgreSQL, pipelines Ziroverse Technologies (Hyderabad) has an “Associate Data FDE” role building data pipelines end to end.
5 Applied AI LLM prompts, tool calling, RAG, evals Razorpay asks for practical LLM or agent experience: prompts, tool calling, RAG, evals or workflow automation.
6 Customer-facing scoping Discovery, SOWs, acceptance criteria Evnek Technologies (Bengaluru) wants candidates who can run discovery independently and write SOWs that clients sign.

Skill 1: Production software engineering

This is the base skill. Salesforce describes the role as needing a jack-of-all-trades technical range. One Salesforce leader said “Problem-solving is the number one skill an FDE needs to have.”

Hiring managers still want proof that you can ship. Cartesia’s Bengaluru role asks for 4+ years building and operating production software, with strong backend fundamentals and reliable delivery. Meesho’s FDE-II listing asks for 2–5 years in software engineering, FDE or client-facing technical delivery at a B2B SaaS or AI product company.

How to build it:

  • Pick Python or TypeScript as your main language and learn one more. A Java or .NET background is useful, because Glassdoor India listings for Bengaluru FDE roles mention Java, Express.js and system design.
  • Ship one service with tests, logging and a README. Avoid notebooks and tutorial clones.
  • Practise reading unfamiliar code and fixing a bug in an open-source repo within a day.

Skill 2: APIs, integrations and authentication

Most FDE work is connecting a product to a customer’s messy systems. DataCamp’s guide says most of the work is connecting a platform to messy customer systems.

Indian listings are specific about this:

  • Ciroos (Bengaluru) wants REST APIs, webhooks, event-driven workflows, regular expressions, ITSM platforms such as ServiceNow, and reliable error handling.
  • Cartesia’s support-side listing asks for troubleshooting with APIs, SDKs, logs and integrations.
  • Dilogs AI (Delhi, hybrid) expects API work using Postman or similar tools. This is an entry point for engineers coming from support or implementation.

How to build it:

  • Integrate two third-party APIs, for example a payments sandbox and a CRM, through a webhook handler.
  • Add retries, pagination, idempotency and OAuth. NareshIT’s transition guide notes that customer systems rarely match their documentation.

Skill 3: Cloud, deployment and observability

FDEs deploy into the customer’s environment, often with security reviews and restricted networks. Cartesia lists comfort with AWS, GCP and Kubernetes, plus enterprise constraints like authentication, networking, observability and security reviews.

The ask is deeper for engineers from SRE and DevOps backgrounds. Ciroos asks for 3–6 years in SRE, DevOps, production engineering, platform operations or technical support. It also lists Kubernetes, a major cloud, CI/CD and observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Datadog or Prometheus.

Large IT services firms have similar listings. Accenture’s Gurgaon FDE listing asks for 3–5 years with cloud-native systems and hands-on application migration, including lift-and-shift and re-platforming.

How to build it:

  • Deploy your Skill 1 service with Docker on one cloud (AWS is the most commonly named).
  • Add dashboards and alerts using Prometheus and Grafana, or Datadog’s free tier.
  • Break it on purpose and write a short incident note on what you found in the logs.

Skill 4: Data and SQL

A lot of “AI problems” at customer sites turn out to be data problems. Paraform’s guide lists data engineering fundamentals: pipelines that move and clean messy client data.

Glassdoor India listings show the same pattern. Innover Digital’s Bengaluru FDE listing tags system design, microservices, SQL, PostgreSQL and distributed systems. A Mumbai listing from Kuber and Company mentions sources like Oracle, SAP or Teradata.

How to build it:

  • Practise SQL joins, window functions and CTEs on a messy public dataset. Clean it with a repeatable script, not manual edits.
  • Design a Postgres schema with indexes, then load data into it through a scheduled job.
  • If you work in banking or insurance, pick a domain dataset. Domain knowledge is a differentiator here.

Skill 5: Applied AI (LLMs, RAG, agents and evals)

Not every FDE role needs this, but AI-focused ones are common. NareshIT’s guide notes that many FDE roles in 2026 involve AI work.

The evidence from listings:

  • Razorpay’s Agent Studio role wants practical prompts, tool calling, RAG, evals or workflow automation.
  • A Google Cloud Gen AI FDE listing asks for pipelines over structured and unstructured data using vector databases and RAG-like architectures. The snippet I saw did not state a location, so read it as a skills benchmark.
  • A Bengaluru Indeed listing expects comfort with Microsoft and ServiceNow stacks, as well as building custom AI agents.
  • Another Bengaluru listing says conversational AI experience is a must.

You don’t need to train models. SkillScouter’s guide says the skill is deploying models in messy real-world environments.

How to build it:

  • Build a RAG app over a real document set, such as policy PDFs or support tickets. Document your chunking choices and retrieval quality.
  • Add tool calling to one internal API.
  • Write 20–30 test cases that check the AI’s output, and rerun them after every prompt change. Evals are what separate a demo from a deployment.

Skill 6: Customer-facing scoping, communication and ownership

This is often the biggest gap for Indian engineers from product or services backgrounds. NareshIT’s skills table calls scoping and communication usually the largest gap.

What employers ask for:

  • SIA (Mumbai) wants you to turn client needs into scoped deliverables, with clear acceptance criteria and measurable outcomes.
  • Evnek asks for SOWs, proposals or technical specifications signed off by clients, and accountability for delivery outcomes.
  • Razorpay lists solutions engineers, sales engineers, founding engineers and operators who wrote code as strong prior profiles.
  • An Indeed India listing expects you to feed patterns across deployments back to product and engineering.

Interview weight reflects this. Build Fast with AI claims FDE interview loops give about half the weight to case studies and client judgment. That is the publisher’s own claim, not independently verified.

How to build it:

  • Write a one-page brief for a hypothetical client: problem, scope, what is out of scope, success metric and risks.
  • Practise a five-minute explanation of a trade-off for a non-technical manager.
  • NareshIT suggests status updates that lead with what changed, and learning to say “that belongs in phase two” without hurting trust.

How much experience do Indian FDE listings ask for?

Mostly 3–6 years, with a long tail on both sides. These are the ranges in listings I reviewed in October 2026:

Employer / city Experience stated Source
Dilogs AI, Delhi (hybrid) 1–3 years Indeed India
Meesho, Bengaluru (FDE-II) 2–5 years Indeed India
Razorpay, Bengaluru 3+ years Razorpay careers page
Ciroos, Bengaluru 3–6 years Ciroos careers page
Cartesia, Bengaluru 4+ years Cartesia careers page
Vendasta, Chennai 5–8 years Indeed India
Evnek Technologies, Bengaluru 5–10 years fwddeploy listing

Entry-level roles exist, but they are rare and often paid less. Ziroverse Technologies in Hyderabad has an “Associate AI Forward Deployed Engineer” role and hires from across India. Build Fast with AI argues that the realistic entry point is two to five years of backend, data or cloud work, followed by a lateral move.

What do these skills pay in India?

Salary evidence is messy, so treat any single figure with caution.

  • Employer-provided bands on Glassdoor India: Cartesia’s Bengaluru role shows ₹70–90 LPA. Keyrus shows ₹22–34 LPA for an AI-native analyst/FDE role. Kuber and Company (Mumbai) shows ₹20–50 LPA. PinnacleU HR (Bengaluru) shows ₹7–10 LPA.
  • Third-party guides: OwnYourCareer quotes ₹18–28 LPA at 0–2 years, ₹28–55 LPA at 3–6 years and ₹55–90+ LPA for senior and global-remote roles. Scaler, citing Glassdoor India, AmbitionBox and Levels.fyi, quotes ₹8–15 LPA at 0–2 years and ₹15–30 LPA at 3–5 years.
  • Averages: NareshIT says salary platforms put the all-India average near ₹13 LPA.

Several Glassdoor-estimated figures on listings are far lower than the employer-provided bands. Use employer-stated ranges first, and ask about fixed pay versus variable pay and ESOPs in the first call.

Step-by-step: build all six skills in 8 weeks

  1. Weeks 1–2: choose a domain. Pick one that Indian employers hire for, such as payments, banking, healthcare or supply chain. Razorpay lists payments, fintech and finance-ops experience as a plus.
  2. Weeks 1–3: build the service. Create a backend in Python or TypeScript that integrates two APIs through webhooks, with authentication and error handling (Skills 1 and 2).
  3. Weeks 3–4: add data. Store and clean data in PostgreSQL, and add a scheduled pipeline (Skill 4).
  4. Weeks 4–5: deploy it. Use Docker and one cloud, then add logs, dashboards and alerts (Skill 3).
  5. Weeks 5–7: add an AI workflow. Build RAG or an agent with tool calling over your data, plus an eval set (Skill 5).
  6. Week 8: write the client pack. Include a scoping brief, an architecture note, a go-live checklist and a handover document. Practise presenting it to a non-engineer (Skill 6).
  7. Then map your gaps. Compare your profile with the listings above, or use the FDE Alignment Checker to see which of the six areas to strengthen first.

Which of the six skills should you build first?

  • Backend or full-stack engineers: start with Skills 3, 5 and 6. You probably have the coding already.
  • SRE, DevOps and support engineers: these backgrounds fit listings like Ciroos and Cartesia’s support-side role. Add Python automation, then AI tooling.
  • Data engineers: lean on Skills 4 and 5, then add API integration and client communication.
  • Solutions, implementation and consulting engineers: you likely have Skill 6. Build the coding depth that listings test.

One honest limit: listing requirements change often, and some are written loosely. Check the current listing before you pick what to study, and treat the experience ranges above as a snapshot, not a rule.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most important forward deployed engineer skills?

Strong production coding (Python or TypeScript) comes first, followed by API integration, cloud deployment, data handling, applied AI and clear communication with non-technical stakeholders. Indian listings from Razorpay, Cartesia and Ciroos all combine these in one role.

Do I need AI skills to become a forward deployed engineer in India?

Not for every listing. Some roles, such as Ciroos, lean on SRE and integration skills, while others, such as Razorpay's Agent Studio role, ask for practical LLM and agent experience. Learning LLM APIs, RAG and evals widens the number of roles you can apply for.

How many years of experience do Indian FDE jobs ask for?

It varies by employer. Listings found in October 2026 ranged from 1–3 years (Dilogs AI, Delhi) to 3+ years (Razorpay), 4+ years (Cartesia) and 5–10 years (Evnek Technologies). Some third-party guides argue that 2–5 years of backend, data or cloud work is the realistic entry point.

What is the salary of a forward deployed engineer in India?

Published figures disagree. Employer-provided bands on Glassdoor India range from ₹7–10 LPA to ₹70–90 LPA, and third-party guides quote anything from ₹8–15 LPA to ₹18–28 LPA for 0–2 years. Check the band against the company's actual listing.
